The instant popularity of Pokemon Go has led to a variety of accidents and injuries, and it’s just claimed it’s first fatality. An 18 year old named Jerson Lopez de Leon in Guatemala was fatally shot while playing the augmented reality game. He becomes the first Pokemon Go death after searching for the imaginary monsters using his cell phone.
The young man was playing Pokemon Go with his cousin in the small city of Chiquimula when he was ambushed. Both of the players were struck by bullets and taken to a hospital. Lopez de Leon later died in a hospital and his cousin is still in critical condition.
Police found nearly 20 bullet casings near the boys, and the first Pokemon Go death raises serious questions about player safety. The augmented reality game became the biggest mobile game of all time last month, and it doesn’t show signs of slowing.
This news comes on the heels of a Pokemon Go robbery and a pair of teens being shot at while playing the game. Reports from publications like The Independent, point to evidence that the shooters tracked or lured the gamers to the location. Local police have issued new warnings to help players stay safe playing the location based mobile game.
Mother to the 18 year old spoke with the publication, mourning the first Pokemon Go death.
“I don’t know why my son left the house, He was already in bed when his cousin sent him a message asking him to go out and download a game a few blocks from the house.”
Lopez de Leon’s tragic death appears to be the first Pokemon Go death, and one that should raise public consciousness. Since the game launched just a few weeks ago, there’s been a steady stream of Pokemon Go related incidents.
